Travel Time

Travel Time selection filters your report by how far you can actually travel from a point, rather than by straight-line distance. Click a place on the map, choose a travel mode and a budget such as 10 minutes, and every item inside the area that can be reached is selected.

This is useful for questions such as "which stores are within a 20 minute drive of this depot" or "which customers are a 10 minute walk from this station".

Turning it on

In the Selection section of the Format pane, turn on Isochrone Select. A control then appears on the map that starts the tool.

Area Outline

How the reachable area is drawn around the roads that can be reached:

  • Follow roads - the boundary follows the road network, so the area has the ragged edges of the streets themselves.
  • Smooth outline - a simpler shape wrapped around the reachable roads.

The area's colours come from the Fill and Outline settings shared with Lasso and Circle Select, and whether items only touching the area are included follows Lasso Mode.

Using it on the map

  1. Select the travel time control, then click the point to travel from.
  2. Set the options in the panel that appears:
    • Mode - Car, HGV, Walking or Cycling.
    • Travel Time or Travel Distance - whether the budget is minutes or kilometres.
    • Value - the budget itself, with a slider whose range suits the mode.
    • Avoid tolls and Avoid ferries for Car and HGV, Avoid unpaved for Walking and Cycling, and Wheelchair accessible for Walking.
  3. The reachable area is drawn on the map and everything inside it is selected, which filters and cross-highlights the rest of the report page.

Distances are shown in kilometres with miles alongside.

Notes

  • The area is calculated inside the visual, using Icon Map's road tiles. Your report data is not sent to a routing service.
  • Larger budgets cover more roads and take longer to calculate.
  • The selection behaves like any other, so the settings on User Selection, such as Max Selections and the selected and unselected transparency, apply.
