Format pane map

The Format pane holds every setting of Icon Map Slicer. This page lists each card and group in the order the pane shows them, with a link to the page that explains it.

The twelve Format pane cards of Icon Map Slicer in pane order, starting with Layer Manager
The cards, in the order the Format pane shows them. Dashed cards appear only in some cases

Open the Format pane

  1. Add at least one field to the visual. Until then the pane shows one card with the message "Add data to the visual before configuring formatting options." and the version number.
  2. Select the visual.
  3. Open the Format pane (the paintbrush icon). In Power BI Desktop with the on-object interaction turned on, select More options on the formatting menu to show the full pane.

How the pane is organized

  • A card is a top-level section, such as Data Layers.
  • A group is a collapsible block inside a card, such as Circles - Formatting.
  • Most groups appear only when the thing they configure is switched on. Turn on Circles in Data Layers and the circle groups appear.
  • A setting with an fx button accepts conditional formatting. See Conditional formatting.

You do not have to use the pane for everything. The Layer Manager adds and edits layers, and on new maps the Basemaps dialog manages basemaps, terrain and the map view. Both write the same settings the pane shows, so you can move between them freely. Conditional formatting, and the settings of the Selection card, are only available in the pane.

If you know Icon Map Pro, the main differences are:

  • Selection takes the place of Pro's Interactivity card, and holds the tools that filter the report.
  • User Interface takes the place of Pro's Controls card, and also holds Tooltips and Layer control.
  • There is no Rendering card. Icon Map Slicer always uses one map engine.
  • There is no API Keys card. Icon Map basemaps need no key.
  • The last card is named Icon Map Slicer.
