Access Tiers
Every dataset in the Icon Map Catalog has one of four access tiers: Basic, Standard, Premium or Commercial. Anyone can browse and preview every tier. Your license is checked when you add a dataset to a map or report.
The four tiers

A layer session is one catalog dataset shown in one session of a map or report. A dataset is charged once per session, however much the viewer pans, zooms or filters, and two datasets on the same map are two layer sessions.
Wherever a dataset appears, the catalog shows its tier and price, for example "Standard · 0.25 credits per session", "Premium B" or "Basic · Free". When your plan includes the tier, it also shows "Included in your plan".

Browse freely, license when you add
You do not need a license to explore the catalog. Anyone can search, preview and configure every dataset:
- Standard and premium datasets preview in full, as map tiles.
- Commercial datasets preview a sample area, in full detail inside that area and with nothing outside it, so you can judge the data before you buy.
- Previews use no credits.
The license check happens when you add the dataset to a map or report, or download it. If your license does not cover it, a message tells you so and offers a way to get access:
- A standard or premium dataset your license does not include: the message explains which license includes it. In Icon Map for Fabric it is titled Upgrade for access, with an Upgrade button for owners. In the Power BI visuals it is titled This dataset is not included in your license.
- A commercial dataset you have not bought: the message offers the ways to buy it in the Icon Map data store. See Buying commercial data.
Checks when a map or report opens
Licenses can change after a dataset was added, for example when a plan changes or a data license ends. So the check is repeated when a map or report opens:
- Icon Map for Fabric checks each catalog layer when the item loads. A layer your license does not cover is not drawn, and a Not shown on the map message names it.
- Icon Map Pro and Icon Map Slicer check every catalog dataset in a report each time the report loads. Datasets your license does not cover are not drawn, and one message, Some catalog layers in this report are not shown, lists them all, with what to do. A report author sees how to get access. A report viewer is asked to contact the report owner.
The rest of the map or report keeps working.
Commercial datasets
Commercial datasets are not included in any license or plan. They are bought separately in the Icon Map data store, as a whole dataset or for just the area you need, and customers with any paid Icon Map plan get 30% off. See Buying commercial data and Renewal and expiry.
